Join us for lunch this Saturday in celebration of Independence Day!

Independence Day marks the anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, which declared independence from Great Britain. It’s hard to imagine Independence Day without fireworks. But how did this tradition get started?

John Adams wrote, “I am apt to believe that [Independence Day] will be celebrated, by succeeding generations, as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade [...] and illuminations from one end of this continent to the other from this time forward, forevermore.” His wish for a large celebration was shared far and wide. The first-ever recorded Fourth of July party was held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on July 4, 1777, with plenty of pomp and parade. Hurrah!
