Originally, Tu b’Av marked the beginning of the grape harvest, where maidens of Jerusalem would wear white and go out dancing in the vineyards. Tu B’Av served as a matchmaking day. The Talmud tells us that the “daughters of Jerusalem would go dance in the vineyards” on the 15th of Av, and “whoever did not have a wife would go there” to find himself a bride. Its modern incarnation is gradually becoming a Hebrew-Jewish Day of Love, slightly resembling Valentine’s Day.
